Trip to Prestwick:

The Bank Holiday weekend in August 2004 (30th) we had a family wedding to attend in Inverness. I was determined to try to get up there flying myself - the longest trip yet undertaken. For the sake of logistics and meeting up with others I decided first to fly to Cumbernauld and later changed this to Prestwick. Full marks to Prestwick for being welcoming and reasonably priced to a light aircraft - worked well, would recommend it to anyone. Not so the Scottish weather. An incoming front blew me into Blackpool, again a pleasant surprise - hotel on site, short walk to the sea, reasonable fees, shame about the town.

G-BAJY at Blackpool - weather was closing in so I diverted there.

Blackpool deserves a visit - a seriously tacky place but the donkeys are cute

this one wanted an ice cream

if flying is not thrilling enough you can always try the big dipper at teh pleasure beach - I think it is one of the biggest in the world

A vulcan V bomber stands somewhat forelorn at the airport - these things just take your breath away - pity they can't paint it

same Vulcan again

Blackpool (the airport not necessarily the town!) is to be highly recommended to GA pilots. I got free landing fees after 50 litres fuel uplift, fuel was reasonably priced and there's a handy Travel Inn just 20 yards from the gate (near the Vulcan shown above) You can walk the 400 yards or so to the sea from here and pick up a tram into town

G-BAJY at the Flight Centre in Prestwick

Cameron House on Loch Lomond = well one has to indulge from time to time!

Prestwick is a sizeable international airport - marginalised by Renfrew having been selected as Glasgow's main airport.

Prestwick is class D and is getting busier with more cheap flights. It has long been home to transatlantic 747's (cargo). As I flew in a 747 was held while I landed! a strange experience. The Flight Centre at Prestwick gave me parking and handling and all in all were reasonably priced and very very helpful. Indeed I believe my 5 day stay was cheaper than it wouyld have been at Cumbernauld had I managed to get there

typical Scottish weather - always changing

Few at 2000? I think not

and when it closes in ....

typical weather encountered - scud running if ever there was!

Trip to Hannover March 2005

I wanted to visit CeBit - the big computer show held annually in Hannover. Did not rtealise just how big it was - went in first hall and thought - 'I can be round this in an hour - only trouble was there were another 25 halls of the same size!!!

The flight was fantastic

went with Ian Hanson - experienced flyer I know from Bournemouth - dropped in to Shoreham first to pick up German Jeppesen trip kit
Weather enroute was OK until Ostend then down to 15oo feet - Ian called IFR and requested climb to FL50 but we were getting ice even going up to FL 60 did not break cloud so we went back - all in all a salutary lesson
